On the Ground with Grassroots Grantmakers
Deep On-Site Learning for Funders Who Begin with Residents

OTG GroupGrassroots Grantmakers' "on the ground" learning gatherings are designed to begin where standard conference workshops end and go deeper.

Intentionally small to facilitate networking and peer exchange, "on the ground" gatherings use the work of a field-leading place-based funder as a platform for learning on a particular theme.  Balancing time devoted to understanding the host organization's context, strategy and learning journey with exploring "going deeper" questions that relate to participant's "back-home" work - matching time out in the community with time for discussion and reflection - "on the grounds" are important professional development, skill-building, and team-building vehicles for place-based philanthropy.

Registrations are limited to 50 participants to maximize opportunities for peer to peer connections and to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to contribute.  Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Who can attend?

"On the Grounds" are designed for funders so registration will be limited to staff, trustees, and grantmaking committee members of funding organizations or people who are sponsored by a funding organization.  We consider this more of a guideline than a policy - and will be generous in making special exceptions for people associated with organizations whose work supports and informs the practice of grassroots grantmaking.

Upcoming "On the Grounds"

We typically host one or two "on the ground" gatherings a year - one in the the spring or early summer, one in the fall - and are intentional about rotating locations from east coast to midwest to west coast so that this learning resource is easily available to funders across out network.  Click here for information about the next "on the ground".

Feedback from previous "on the grounds"

This will influence my work immediately and for a very long time.

The overall program design and organization seemed to create  maximum learning and sharing.

Hearing from the resident leaders was incredible.

I appreciated the opportunity to meet with and learn from others who are doing similar work in their respective communities.

The conversations self-start because the interests and challenges are so similar.

This information will be shared with more residents, community leaders, advocates, stakeholders, etc. to start thinking and idea sharing and opportunities to take ownership.

I was inspired and learned about many techniques, possibilities, and challenges of organizing for change and getting a resident led vision to materialize.

Best part – participation of the community organizers and the chance to see success in action.

I am a community member on a small grants neighborhood grantmaking committee.  This helped a lot in giving me a wider perspective on this grassroots “movement” because I am new to this arena.

This mix of participants was fantastic.

This was great.  Wonderful networking and information/idea exchange opportunity.
